Unique stays in France

Treehouses, bubbles under the stars, yurts deep in the woods, domes facing the sea. A curated selection of genuinely eco-conscious places — no greenwashing, no booking fee.

Sleeping five metres above the ground in an oak treehouse, falling asleep under a transparent bubble counting stars, waking up in a yurt warmed by a wood stove while mist rises from the valley. A unique stay is not an Instagram backdrop — it is a different way of inhabiting a place, for a night or a week.

France has more unusual accommodation than any other European country: several thousand addresses, from the Vosges to the Dordogne. Finding one is easy; finding a good one is not. At ecobooking we only list places whose ecological commitment can be verified, and we score them from 0 to 100 on measurable criteria. You contact the host directly. No booking fee is added to your night.

The main types of unique stays

Treehouse

The undisputed star. Perched in a century-old oak, beech or chestnut tree, an eco-built treehouse uses straps and cables rather than nails and screws, local timber and often a green roof. Models with a private hot tub on the terrace are the most sought-after for a romantic weekend — book two to three months ahead.

Transparent bubble

An inflatable or semi-rigid sphere offering a 360° view of the canopy and the night sky. Best from spring to autumn; in winter, check for heating. The finest bubbles sit far from light pollution and include an opaque section for privacy.

Traditional yurt

The nomadic dwelling of the Mongolian steppes, adopted by French forests. A circular wooden frame, wool felt, a central stove: enveloping warmth and remarkably soft acoustics. Often paired with dry toilets and solar panels, the yurt has one of the smallest footprints of all.

Tiny house

15 to 30 m² designed down to the centimetre, sometimes on wheels. Tiny houses embody joyful minimalism and suit couples as well as small families. The best ones run fully off-grid: solar, rainwater harvesting, dry toilets.

Geodesic dome

Inspired by Buckminster Fuller, the dome offers exceptional strength for a minimal ground footprint. Its large glazed bay — sometimes a transparent ceiling — makes it a superb stargazing post. Very popular in the mountains and by the sea.

Gypsy wagon

Restored Romani or circus wagons: painted wood, a stove, a sleeping alcove. This is the most affordable unique stay, with genuine heritage value. Perfect for a first unusual weekend on a budget.

Floating cabin

Moored on a pond or lake, often reached by rowing boat. Falling asleep to the lapping of water and waking in morning mist is probably the most calming experience in the whole category.

Houseboat

A river — sometimes urban — variation, on the canals of the North, Burgundy or the Midi. An excellent way to combine city and nature, and often reachable by train: a real bonus for a low-carbon trip.

Where to stay: the best regions

Périgord & Dordogne

The French capital of the treehouse: dense forest, river valleys, extraordinary food. Peak season May to October — book spa cabins far ahead.

Ardèche & Cévennes

Gorges, wild rivers, ecolodges hidden at the end of dirt tracks. For lovers of raw nature and swimming in cold, clear water.

Brittany

Seaside cabins, unusual stays in the forest of Brocéliande, a Celtic atmosphere. Excellent train access from Paris.

Alsace & Vosges

Fir-tree country: forest cabins, local timber chalets, wood stoves. Magical in autumn and under snow.

Hauts-de-France

Consistently underrated, this region hides gems around quiet ponds, an hour from Lille and two from Brussels. Ideal for a short, flight-free weekend.

Provence & South-West

Domes facing the Alpilles, cabins among the vines, tiny houses in Gascony. September and October are often the perfect months here.

Alps & Jura

High-altitude cabins, domes with panoramic views, solar chalets. A four-season destination: hiking in summer, snowshoeing in winter.

How much does a unique stay cost in France?

Typical ranges for two people, one night, outside peak season. Weekends, bank holidays and school holidays usually add 20–40%.

Yurt€80 – €130
Gypsy wagon€90 – €150
Forest cabin (ground level)€100 – €180
Treehouse€130 – €220
Tiny house€140 – €230
Geodesic dome€160 – €280
Transparent bubble€180 – €300
Cabin with private hot tub€250 – €450

Tip: November, January and March offer the best rates — and far more peace and quiet.

When to go

Spring · April to June

Nature opens up, temperatures are mild, prices are still low. The best window for a first night in a treehouse.

Summer · July and August

High season: book three to four months ahead. Long evenings and swimming, but peak prices.

Autumn · September to November

Our favourite season. Colour, morning mist, silence restored. Treehouses are at their most beautiful.

Winter · December to March

Pure cocooning if there is a stove: a snowbound cabin, a heated bubble, a steaming hot tub in the cold. Check opening dates.

How to spot a genuinely eco-friendly stay

The word “eco” has become a marketing argument. Here are the six concrete criteria we verify before listing a place — and that you can check yourself.

1

Energy

Solar panels, micro-hydro, LED lighting, an autonomy claim backed by numbers. Be wary of energy-hungry air conditioning in an “ecological” cabin.

2

Water

Dry toilets, rainwater harvesting, greywater treated by reed beds, low-flow taps.

3

Materials

Untreated local timber, bio-based insulation (hemp, cellulose, sheep wool), raw earth. Sheet metal and plastic are warning signs.

4

Food

A kitchen garden, breakfast from local producers, organic produce. A committed host names their suppliers.

5

Mobility

Distance to the station, transfers offered, bikes available. A perfect eco stay loses its point after a 600 km drive.

6

Certifications

Green Key, EU Ecolabel, WWF Panda Gîtes, Accueil Paysan. A self-awarded “house label” is worthless.

Frequently asked questions

What is the most popular unique stay in France?

Treehouses with a private hot tub or spa dominate searches, especially for romantic weekends. Transparent bubbles and geodesic domes with a view come next.

Can you go as a family?

Yes. Larger tiny houses, family cabins and yurts routinely sleep four to six. Always state the children’s ages when booking: some high treehouses are not recommended under age six.

Is there a bathroom and shower?

Most places have their own facilities, often with dry toilets. The most rustic cabins and some tipis share a nearby bathroom block — this is always stated on the listing.

Can you stay in winter?

Many places are open year-round provided they are insulated and heated (wood stove, solar heating). Unheated bubbles and uninsulated cabins often close from November to March.

Are they reachable by train?

It varies. Most are deep in nature, 10–40 km from a station. Some hosts offer transfers. Every ecobooking listing shows the distance to the nearest station.

How far in advance should I book?

For a weekend between May and September: two to four months. Off-season: two to four weeks. Bubbles and spa cabins sell out fastest.
