The yurt is the most affordable unique stay and, paradoxically, one of the most accomplished ecologically. A demountable frame of willow or larch, a covering of wool felt, no concrete foundation: it sits on a platform and can be removed without a trace. The central stove heats the whole volume in twenty minutes, and the round shape produces a soft, almost muffled acoustic that explains the quality of sleep people find there.
France has more unique stays than any other country in Europe — several thousand addresses, from the Vosges to the Dordogne. The difficulty is not finding one, but telling the genuinely committed places apart from those content with green vocabulary.

Three things the directories will not tell you, and that separate a good night from a bad one.
Look at the covering: natural wool felt insulates and breathes; a PVC tarpaulin turns the yurt into a sauna in summer and a fridge in winter.
The stove needs refilling during the night below 5 °C. That is not a fault, it is the instruction manual — plan for it.
A yurt offers little privacy: it is a single volume with no partitions. For two it is perfect; for five, everyone hears everyone.

Frequently asked questions
Is a yurt cold?
No, if it is properly insulated and has a stove. Wool felt is a remarkable insulator and the circular volume heats fast. The temperature does drop quickly once the stove goes out, so winter nights mean refilling it around three or four in the morning.
Can you stay in a yurt year-round?
In France and Belgium most yurts close from November to March — not for technical reasons but because demand collapses. Those that stay open in winter, often in the mountains, offer a beautiful experience at a very low rate.
Which region has the most choice in France?
The Périgord and the Dordogne have the highest density, followed by the Ardèche, Brittany and the Vosges. But the Hauts-de-France and Gascony, less touristed, often offer better rates and real quiet.
