Paviljoen Esch is a prestigious designer ecolodge set on a century-old sandy path in the Nationaal Landschap Winterswijk, just 800 metres from the charming town of Aalten in the Achterhoek. On a private plot of nearly 5,000 m², this biobased and circular pavilion embodies the excellence of sustainable construction in the Netherlands — selected for the National Timber Construction Award (Nationale Houtbouwprijs). Built entirely from solid timber without a single steel beam, with cementless concrete foundations (-80% CO₂), factory-bonded CLT panels, wood fibre insulation, triple glazing and an extremely high level of airtightness. The contemporary designer interior is 100% circular. The pavilion comprises a split-level right wing (raised ground floor with master bedroom and balcony, lower level with 2 spacious bedrooms) and a left wing featuring a large living area with 4-metre-high ceilings. Ideal for families with grandparents, groups of friends or romantic getaways for two. 2 bicycles, children's bike seats, baby cots and high chairs available on site. Dogs welcome.

How to get here without a car
When to visit?
All seasons: spring and summer for cycling and hiking in the Nationaal Landschap, autumn for the colours of the Guelders countryside, and winter for the magic of snowy landscapes and absolute tranquillity.
Local producers involved
The Achterhoek region is home to around twenty vineyards to visit, including Wijngoed De Hennepe with its quality wines. Nearby, the German distillery Geuting offers local whiskies and spirits. Tea gardens and educational farms are accessible by bike from the ecolodge.
