This stay

Back Track Bothies is a truly exceptional eco tiny house project in Glenfinnan, at the heart of the Scottish Highlands (Scotland, UK). Founded and hand-built by Mark & Ally in 2022, the property features 3 quirky wooden eco-cabins designed to be sustainable, ethical and cosy all year round. Each bothy has been inspired by explorers cabins and traditional Scottish mountain bothies and huts, made from natural materials (predominantly wood and metal, with minimal toxic plastic). Location is exceptional: on the famous Road to the Isles (A830), within a 5-10 minute walk of the iconic Glenfinnan Monument, the legendary Glenfinnan Viaduct, Glenfinnan Station Museum, Church of St Mary and St Finnan, and Loch Shiel. Ally has 25 years of experience in the Scottish tourism industry. Distances: Edinburgh 160 miles, Glasgow 124 miles, Inverness 79 miles, Fort William 15 miles, Isle of Skye 64 miles by ferry. Documented eco practices: turf roofs, natural sheep wool insulation, wood-burning stoves, indoor composting toilets, hot water from renewable electricity, recycled church pew seating + cable drum tables (upcycling), corten steel fire pits, hand-made wooden Adirondack chairs, all wood/charcoal/heat logs included. Shared outdoor Swedish-style bath (water heated by renewable electricity) for 2 - just add your name to the bath blackboard. Perfect for guests travelling by train or bus (Glenfinnan Station 5-10 min walk).

The host's philosophy

Mark and Ally designed and hand-built the three Glenfinnan bothies in 2022, with the ambition of offering sustainable, ethical and welcoming accommodation all year round. Each cabin is made from natural materials — primarily wood and metal — with minimal use of plastic, and features composting toilets, sheep's wool insulation and living turf roofs. Their approach is working towards Green Tourism Gold certification, progressing step by step from the Bronze award achieved in 2023.
