Ksar El Khorbat is an exceptional eco-tourism project located 50 km east of Tinghir (or Tinerhir), in the lower Todra valley (southern Morocco). El Khorbat Oujdid is an ancient ksar (fortified village) built in raw earth in the 19th century and recently restored through international cooperation (College of Technical Architects of Barcelona). The goal is to use eco-tourism to preserve a historical and artistic heritage of incalculable value: raw earth kasbahs. Half of the houses in El Khorbat are still inhabited — a living village, not merely a backdrop. Others have been rehabilitated with a new purpose: a guesthouse, an Oasis Museum, a women's craft workshop, and a traditional Moroccan cuisine restaurant. Prestigious certifications: Clef Verte (international environmental label) + Trophée Maroc du Tourisme Responsable 2010 category. Strategic location: an ideal starting point for excursions to the oases of southern Morocco, the Todra and Gheris gorges, the route of a thousand kasbahs, and the great dunes of Merzouga. Living Berber culture with haiks embroidered by women, henna, and a fair souk in April.

The host's philosophy
At El Khorbat, ecotourism serves the preservation of an exceptional historical heritage: the ksour and kasbahs built from raw earth in southern Morocco. The project, launched in 2002 in collaboration with the Association El Khorbat pour le Patrimoine et le Développement Durable, aims to improve the living conditions of local residents while keeping Berber culture alive. Visitors are invited to embrace a form of tourism that respects the natural environment and the customs of the local population, in particular by refraining from encouraging the village children to beg.
How to get here without a car
When to visit?
Spring (April, with the fair souk) and autumn are the most pleasant seasons to visit the pre-Saharan oases of southern Morocco. Winter is mild and bright, ideal for excursions into the Todra and Gheris gorges.
Local producers involved
Visitors can purchase embroidered haïks directly from the village women who make them, as well as other local products available at the women's craft workshop and during the April fair-trade souk.
