A charming little host-owned caravan, nestled in the peaceful village of Menugoutte, in the heart of the Belgian Ardennes. It offers a modest yet warm space, an ideal retreat for a simple getaway, close to the surrounding countryside and forest. Located just a short distance from Herbeumont, Chiny and Neufchâteau, it is an ideal starting point for exploring the region. It is particularly well suited to solo or duo hikers.
We built the caravan as a minimalist dwelling, a refuge designed to welcome family, friends and hikers. The main goal is to create a space that fosters a connection with the natural environment, while emphasising autonomy and sustainability.
This small dwelling is the result of several months of handcrafted work carried out as a duo, using locally sourced or recycled materials wherever possible. The caravan also served as a prototype for testing sustainable building methods, such as charred wood cladding, wood wool insulation and timber framing — techniques we subsequently applied to the construction of our own home.
The project began with the recovery and restoration of a "char à banc" (a traditional horse-drawn bench wagon). From there, we set out to design a compact and functional space, incorporating a dry toilet, a rainwater harvesting system, and electricity powered mainly by solar batteries. It was designed around simplicity and energy efficiency, and we continue to improve it in that direction.
The caravan remains mobile and towable, yet it was built in compliance with local planning regulations, as we firmly believe that light-weight housing has its full and rightful place within the law.
Above all, it has allowed us to share wonderful moments, to host travellers during participatory workcamps for the construction of our home, and to make meaningful encounters. In that same spirit, we are delighted to share it today as accommodation — a place we hope you will enjoy as much as we do.
Nous avons construit la roulotte comme un habitat minimaliste, un refuge destiné à accueillir famille, amis et randonneurs. L’objectif principal est de créer un espace favorisant la connexion avec l'environnement naturel, tout en mettant l’accent sur l’autonomie et la durabilité. Ce petit habitat est le résultat de plusieurs mois de travail artisanal réalisé en duo, nous avons utilisé des matériaux locaux ou recyclés. La roulotte nous a également servi de prototype pour tester des méthodes de construction durable, comme le bardage en bois brûlé, l'isolation en laine de bois et l'ossature bois, des techniques que nous avons ensuite appliquées à la construction de notre maison. Le projet a commencé par la récupération et la restauration d’un "char à banc". De là, nous avons voulu concevoir un espace compact et fonctionnel, intégrant des toilettes sèches, un système de récupération d'eau de pluie, l’électricité alimentée essentiellement par des batteries solaires. Elle a été conçue autour de la simplicité et de l'efficacité énergétique, et nous continuons à l'améliorer dans cette direction. La roulotte reste mobile et tractable, néanmoins elle a été réalisée en respectant les contraintes urbanistiques locales, convaincus que l'habitat léger a toute sa place légalement. Enfin, elle nous a surtout permis de vivre de bons moments, d’héberger des voyageurs lors de chantiers participatifs pour la construction de notre maison, et de faire de belles rencontres. Dans cette même optique, c’est avec plaisir que nous la partageons aujourd’hui comme logement, un lieu que nous espérons que vous pourrez apprécier autant que nous.
