The Biohotel Rupertus is the first 100% certified organic hotel in Leogang, in the Salzburger Land, on the border of Tyrol. Founded in 1977 by Sophie and Gottfried Herzog, it was taken over in 2012 by their daughter Nadja Blumenkamp and her husband Olaf — the 2nd family generation. This hotel nestled in the Leogang valley, surrounded by meadows, forests and Alpine peaks (Asitz and Leoganger Steinberge), embodies the vision of a climate-neutral hotel. The Rupertus runs on 100% green energy from 3 sources: its own photovoltaic panels, communal biogas (Hackschnitzel Heizwerk Asitz managed by Olaf), and green hydroelectricity from Salzburg AG. The hotel was certified organic in 2015, holds the Austrian Ecolabel and is a member of Bio Hotels. Its emissions, calculated by Fokus Zukunft, amount to 2.41 kg CO²e per night (vs. 20–40 kg in a conventional hotel — 90% less). 50 organic rooms and nature suites (30 doubles + 8 multi-bed rooms + 12 suites) equipped with metal-free beds (sleep science), 100% organic cotton bedding, smart TV, wifi, and mountain-view balconies. 2-toque Gault & Millau restaurant offering 2 five-course menus every evening: Alpine Organic Cuisine (Austrian + Mediterranean) and Plant Power (100% vegan menu). Founded in 1977 and taken over as a second-generation venture by Nadja Blumenkamp and Olaf, the Biohotel Rupertus embodies a vision of climate-neutral hospitality, with emissions calculated at 2.41 kg CO²e per night — approximately 90% less than a conventional hotel. The hotel produces its own green energy (photovoltaic, biogas, hydroelectricity) and serves 100% organic cuisine sourced from regional producers and its own garden. The Herzog-Blumenkamp family is committed to making the Rupertus an energy self-sufficient hotel, potentially becoming a net energy supplier for the local community.
How to get here without a car
When to visit?
All seasons: skiing and winter sports in winter, hiking, mountain biking and wellness in spring, summer and autumn. The 21 m infinity pool is open all year round.
Local producers involved
The restaurant sources 100% organic products from regional producers in the Salzburger Land and from its own organic garden; fish come exclusively from wild fishing or certified organic aquaculture.
